The problem

Passwords alone keep failing. Reused logins, leaked emails and single-sign-on flaws mean one weak link can hand attackers your files — and most people still rely on just a password.

What changed

Between August 4 and 21, ~5,000 Dropbox accounts were accessed via a flaw in Lenovo ID single sign-on: attackers registered a Lenovo ID against a victim's email because verification was skipped, then walked in. Dropbox has since secured the accounts and notified users and regulators.

The catch

The crucial detail: none of the breached accounts had multi-factor authentication enabled, which is exactly what would have stopped this. SMS codes help but can be SIM-swapped, so an authenticator app is stronger.

What it means for you

Spend five minutes today turning on 2FA — ideally an authenticator app — for your email, cloud storage and main social accounts. It blocks the vast majority of these takeovers, even if your password leaks.
