Nvidia buys AI's home, Dyson's $499 camera toothbrush, and a Dropbox wake-up call

Today's tech that's actually worth your time: Nvidia's record $12.9B grab of Hugging Face, Dyson's genuinely wild (and pricey) camera toothbrush, a WhatsApp setting that stops blurry photos, the Dropbox breach lesson on 2FA, and the PS5's stacked September.

  1. commentary

Nvidia is buying Hugging Face for $12.9B

Nvidia just agreed to buy Hugging Face for $12.9B โ€” its biggest acquisition ever. Hugging Face is essentially the GitHub of AI: 3M+ open models, 500k+ datasets and 18M+ developers. Now it belongs to the company selling the GPUs everyone trains on. Nvidia promises the platform stays neutral, with AMD and Intel hardware still supported. That promise is the whole story. ๐Ÿค–

    The problem
Open-source AI has had one true town square โ€” Hugging Face โ€” that stayed deliberately hardware-neutral, so developers could build on any chip or cloud. As AI consolidates into a handful of giants, the worry has been that the neutral ground gets bought and quietly tilted.
    What changed
On September 3, Jensen Huang announced Nvidia will acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion (about $11.9B for investors plus up to $1B for employee retention) โ€” Nvidia's largest-ever deal. The platform hosts 3M+ models, 500k+ datasets and 1M+ applications used by 18M+ developers. The deal is expected to close in the first half of next year.
    The catch
Nvidia says Hugging Face stays open โ€” no Nvidia hardware required, with AMD and Intel support expected to remain. But the company that sells the shovels now owns the marketplace, and 'stays neutral' is a promise, not a guarantee. How it plays out over the next year is the thing to watch.
    What it means for you
If you use Hugging Face, nothing changes today โ€” keep building. Just watch for subtle nudges toward Nvidia's stack (optimizations, defaults, pricing) as the deal closes, and keep your workflow portable across hardware.

Dyson made a $499 toothbrush with a camera inside

Dyson's new CameraJet toothbrush has a literal camera inside. A 100,000-pixel macro lens spots the gaps between your teeth in real time, and its 'Gap Optical Targeting' AI fires a precise burst of mouthrinse right at them. It's part of a 10-product fall 2026 lineup (vacuums, purifiers, hair tools). The engineering is genuinely impressive โ€” the price is $499 (~โ‚น43,000). For a toothbrush. ๐Ÿ˜…

    The problem
Most 'smart' toothbrushes just nag you with an app and a timer โ€” they can't actually see where you're missing, so the plaque between teeth (where it matters most) goes untouched.
    What changed
At Dyson Unveiled / IFA 2026, Dyson revealed the CameraJet: the first toothbrush with a built-in 100,000-pixel macro lens. Its Gap Optical Targeting machine-learning system identifies gaps between teeth in real time and triggers a precision burst of mouthrinse at that exact spot. It headlines a 10-product fall 2026 drop.
    The catch
It costs $499 (~โ‚น43,000) โ€” flagship-phone money for oral care โ€” and a camera-plus-AI system in your mouth raises the usual questions about who processes the imagery and whether the payoff beats a good regular brush and floss.
    What it means for you
If your gums and dentist are happy, a solid electric brush plus flossing does 95% of this for a fraction of the price. Watch this as a signal of where 'AI in everything' gadgets are heading โ€” impressive, but ask what problem it actually solves for you before you pay.

Stop WhatsApp from blurring your photos

That blurry WhatsApp photo isn't your camera โ€” it's WhatsApp compressing everything to 'Standard' by default. One setting fixes it forever: Settings โ†’ Storage and data โ†’ Media upload quality โ†’ HD. Now every photo and video sends sharp automatically, with no tapping 'HD' each time. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

    The problem
WhatsApp defaults every image and video to 'Standard' quality to save data, so the photos you send land softer and blurrier than the original โ€” and most people never realise there's a switch.
    What changed
WhatsApp has a default media-quality setting: go to Settings โ†’ Storage and data โ†’ Media upload quality and choose HD. From then on, everything you send goes out at the higher quality automatically โ€” no per-photo tapping.
    The catch
HD media uses more mobile data and storage, so on a tight plan you'll notice bigger uploads. It also doesn't magically improve a photo that was low-res to begin with.
    What it means for you
Flip it to HD once tonight and every photo you share from then on looks noticeably sharper โ€” especially screenshots, documents and group memories people actually zoom into.

5,000 Dropbox accounts hacked โ€” none had 2FA

Around 5,000 Dropbox accounts were just breached, with hackers viewing and downloading people's files. The one thing every compromised account had in common? No two-factor authentication. The fix is a 5-minute weekend job: turn on 2FA on your email, cloud storage and socials โ€” and use an authenticator app, not SMS. โœ…

    The problem
Passwords alone keep failing. Reused logins, leaked emails and single-sign-on flaws mean one weak link can hand attackers your files โ€” and most people still rely on just a password.
    What changed
Between August 4 and 21, ~5,000 Dropbox accounts were accessed via a flaw in Lenovo ID single sign-on: attackers registered a Lenovo ID against a victim's email because verification was skipped, then walked in. Dropbox has since secured the accounts and notified users and regulators.
    The catch
The crucial detail: none of the breached accounts had multi-factor authentication enabled, which is exactly what would have stopped this. SMS codes help but can be SIM-swapped, so an authenticator app is stronger.
    What it means for you
Spend five minutes today turning on 2FA โ€” ideally an authenticator app โ€” for your email, cloud storage and main social accounts. It blocks the vast majority of these takeovers, even if your password leaks.

Marvel's Wolverine (Sept 15) or still waiting for GTA 6?

Marvel's Wolverine lands September 15 โ€” a PS5 exclusive from Insomniac, the Spider-Man studio, and it's looking brutal in the best way. Between this and a stacked slate, is the PS5 quietly having one of its best years, or are you still holding out for GTA 6 before you care? No wrong answer โ€” what's actually pulling you back to your console this year? ๐ŸŽฎ
