Gemini 4 Argon goes paid-first, HomeView hits Rs 39,900, and there is no digital arrest

Google's new model opens up, but mostly to people who pay. Apple prices HomeView for India, WhatsApp has a setting for scam floods, police repeat that digital arrest is fiction, and an AI-built Chrome exploit shows how fast patching has to get.

    commentary

Gemini 4 Argon opens up, mostly for people who pay

Google opened Gemini 4 Argon to a much wider group on October 13: developers on the API, plus Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app and AI Mode. Free users aren't mentioned anywhere in Google's post, which tells you most of what you need to know about who this launch is for. The API is cheap for now at $2 in and $10 out per million tokens, and it doubles on November 30. If you build things, test it this month. If you don't, there's no reason to buy a subscription on the strength of a benchmark chart Google drew itself.

    The question

Is Gemini 4 Argon available for free Gemini app users?

    In one line

Not clearly. On October 13, 2026 Google opened Gemini 4 Argon to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app and AI Mode, and to developers through the API. Google's announcement doesn't mention free users, so for now treat it as a paid-tier model.

    The problem

Argon launched on September 30 to a small group of cyber defenders, so almost nobody could use the model Google said led most benchmarks.

    What changed

On October 13, Google made it globally available on the Gemini API and AI Studio, and put it in the Gemini app and AI Mode for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Introductory API pricing is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens until November 30, when it moves to $4 and $20.

    The catch

The benchmark wins are Google's own claims, a few from private evals, and the free tier isn't addressed at all.

    What it means for you

Developers should run their own prompts against it before the price doubles. Everyone else can wait a few weeks for independent tests; your current model isn't suddenly useless.

    Questions people ask

How much does the Gemini 4 Argon API cost?

Google's introductory price is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cached input 95% cheaper. From November 30, 2026 it rises to $4 and $20. If you're building something on it, the next six weeks are the cheapest it will be.

Where can I use Gemini 4 Argon today?

Developers can call it through AI Studio and the Gemini API, which Google says is available globally. AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get it in the Gemini app and in AI Mode in Search, and Ultra subscribers also get it in Google Antigravity, Google's coding tool.

Are Google's Gemini 4 Argon benchmark claims verified?

Not independently yet. Google cites first place on the Vals Index and 87% on the ERQA embodied reasoning test, and some scores come from private evaluations by Gamow Labs. Those are Google's numbers, so wait for outside testing before treating it as the best model around.

Apple HomeView is Rs 39,900 in India, and the EU gets nothing

Apple HomeView will cost Rs 39,900 in India, with pre-orders open since October 13 and sales from November 13. Yesterday we said India had no price or date, and that turned out to be wrong: India is in the first wave, while the EU doesn't get it at all because Siri AI isn't allowed there yet. The wall version needs a mount that starts at Rs 6,900, which is a very Apple way to price a screw-on bracket. For a 7-inch screen, this only pays off if your home already runs on Apple gear and you're betting the new Siri is as good as Apple says.

    The question

What is the Apple HomeView price in India and when does it go on sale?

    In one line

Apple HomeView costs Rs 39,900 in India for both the tabletop and wall-mounted models. Pre-orders opened on October 13, 2026 and sales start on November 13. Wall mounts are extra, from Rs 6,900. It's a lot for a smart display, so it only makes sense in an Apple-heavy home.

    The problem

Indian buyers usually get Apple's home products late or never, and Apple rarely says which markets come first.

    What changed

Apple's newsroom lists India for pre-orders and November 13 availability, with Siri AI available in English here. Smartprix reports Rs 39,900 for both models and wall mounts from Rs 6,900, sold on Apple's site and Store app.

    The catch

Most of the clever bits, like Siri using your messages and calendar, need an Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad, and camera alerts need iCloud+. Without those, it's a pricey speaker with a screen.

    What it means for you

If you're deep in Apple's world, pre-ordering is low risk since sales don't start until November 13. Everyone else should wait for reviews of the new Siri, because that's the actual product here.

    Questions people ask

Is Apple HomeView available in the EU?

No. Apple says HomeView isn't on sale in the European Union because Siri AI isn't available in iOS there yet. India is in the first wave along with the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, with Singapore pre-orders opening on October 15.

Do I need an iPhone to use Apple HomeView?

Not to use the device itself. But Siri's personal context, like pulling details from Messages or Calendar, only works when HomeView is paired with an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone or iPad. Camera alerts also need compatible cameras and an iCloud+ plan.

What does Apple HomeView actually do?

It's a 7-inch screen running on an A18 chip that recognises up to six people with a personal home screen each. It does FaceTime, Apple Music and Apple TV, shows up to nine home camera feeds, and controls Matter lights, locks and blinds by voice or touch.

One WhatsApp switch that mutes scam message floods

WhatsApp has a setting called Block unknown account messages, under Settings, Privacy, Advanced. Once it's on, an unknown account that blasts you with messages gets blocked automatically before it fills your chat list. It doesn't screen every stranger, and WhatsApp doesn't say what counts as high volume, so treat it as a filter for the spray-and-pray scammers rather than a force field. Ten seconds to switch on, and it pairs well with today's digital-arrest warning.

    The question

How do I block messages from unknown numbers on WhatsApp?

    In one line

Turn on Block unknown account messages: in WhatsApp go to Settings, then Privacy, then Advanced, and switch it on. WhatsApp will then block messages from an unknown account when it sends you an unusually high volume. It won't stop every single stranger, but it kills the floods.

    The problem

Scam campaigns on WhatsApp often start with a burst of messages from a number you've never saved, and by the time you block it, the hook is already in.

    What changed

WhatsApp's Block unknown account messages toggle, under Settings, Privacy, Advanced, automatically blocks unknown accounts that send messages in high volume, as Techloy's walkthrough shows.

    The catch

It's a volume filter. WhatsApp doesn't publish the threshold, and one quiet, well-written scam message can still land.

    What it means for you

Switch it on today, add Silence unknown callers under Privacy, Calls, and set both up on your parents' phones too.

    Questions people ask

Does WhatsApp Block unknown account messages stop all scam messages?

No. It's built for high-volume messages from accounts not in your contacts, and WhatsApp doesn't say what volume triggers it. A scammer who sends one careful message can still reach you, so keep treating unknown numbers with suspicion.

What else should I turn on in WhatsApp against scam calls?

Pair it with Silence unknown callers under Settings, Privacy, Calls. Calls from numbers not in your contacts stop ringing but still show up in your call list. Together the two settings cut most of the noise scammers use to get your attention.

There is no such thing as a digital arrest

There is no such thing as a digital arrest, and Hyderabad Police said so again on October 14 after a 72-year-old woman lost Rs 2.20 crore to a fake CBI officer on a video call. The script is always the same: a parcel or your Aadhaar is linked to a crime, an officer appears on camera with a warrant, you're told to stay alone and tell nobody, and then comes the deposit. The newest twist I've seen is in Pune, where scammers name-dropped the Data Protection Board of India to sound current. If someone official wants you alone, on camera and paying, you already know the answer.

    The question

Can police or CBI put you under digital arrest on a video call in India?

    In one line

No. There is no such thing as a digital arrest in Indian law. Hyderabad Police repeated on October 14, 2026 that no government agency or police force will demand money over a phone or video call. Anyone keeping you on camera and asking for a deposit is running a scam.

    The problem

Digital-arrest scams keep working because they hijack fear of authority, and they target older people who are least likely to question a uniform on a screen.

    What changed

On October 14, Hyderabad Police warned that no government agency demands money over phone or video calls and that digital arrest doesn't exist, citing a Rs 2.20 crore loss. The same week, The420 reported a Pune woman losing Rs 68 lakh across nine UPI apps, and Delhi Police arresting 11 people tied to a Cambodia-linked ring.

    The catch

Warnings like this have been going out for two years and losses are still growing, which says awareness alone isn't fixing it. Banks flagging large, odd transfers from seniors would do more.

    What it means for you

Have the five-minute talk with your parents this weekend: no officer arrests anyone on video, hang up, call back on a known number, and report on 1930 straight away.

    Questions people ask

What should I do if I get a digital arrest call?

Hang up. Then call the agency yourself using its officially published number, tell a family member, and don't transfer money under any pressure. Save call logs, chats and screenshots, and report it on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in quickly, since police say fast reporting can help freeze the money.

How much money have people lost to digital arrest scams in 2026?

Single cases run into crores. Hyderabad Police cited a 72-year-old woman who lost Rs 2.20 crore after a fake CBI video call. In Pune, a woman sent Rs 68 lakh through nine UPI apps after scammers claimed the Data Protection Board was investigating her.

Does the Data Protection Board of India call people to investigate them?

No. Scammers in a Pune case used the Data Protection Board's name to sound official, but the board doesn't phone individuals demanding money. Any call that drops a new government body's name and then asks you to pay is the same digital-arrest script with fresh vocabulary.

    hot take

AI built a full Chrome exploit in six days. Restart your browser

XBOW revealed on October 13 that AI agents running GPT-5.6 Sol built a full Chrome exploit chain in six days with about $40,000 of compute, and Google paid it a $250,000 bounty. Humans picked the targets and checked the work, so this isn't a robot hacker acting alone, but it's still a huge drop in what this kind of attack costs. Brokers advertise up to $1.5 million for the same class of exploit. When finding bugs gets this cheap, the only defence ordinary people control is how fast they install fixes, and that starts with actually restarting Chrome when the button turns red.

    The question

Did AI really build a working Chrome exploit for Google's $250,000 bounty?

    In one line

Yes, with people steering it. XBOW disclosed on October 13, 2026 that its agents running OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol built a three-bug Chrome exploit chain in six days using about $40,000 of compute, earning Google's $250,000 reward. Google has fixed all three bugs.

    The problem

Full Chrome exploit chains used to take elite teams weeks or months, which kept them rare and expensive.

    What changed

Per CyberInsider, XBOW's agents chained a V8 Maglev bug, an animated-WebP decoder flaw and a Crashpad overflow between August 2 and 7, launching Calculator from a webpage in Chrome Beta. Google approved the $250,000 reward on August 31 and fixed all three bugs.

    The catch

This was a well-funded team with researchers guiding the agents and backup bugs ready, not a one-click attack anyone can run.

    What it means for you

Turn on automatic updates everywhere and restart your browser within a day of an update. Patching speed now matters more than which browser you picked.

    Questions people ask

Is my Chrome browser safe from the XBOW exploit chain?

Google has patched all three vulnerabilities, so you're covered once Chrome has updated and restarted. The risk is the browser that's been sitting open for two weeks with the update pending, so restart it when Chrome asks.

How much did the AI Chrome exploit cost to build?

About $40,000 in compute over six days, from August 2 to 7, 2026. Google paid $250,000 for it. Exploit broker Crowdfense advertises up to $1.5 million for desktop Chrome chains, which shows how cheap this kind of attack research just became.
