Will Google still back the Googlebook in 2036?
Google says Googlebooks get updates for up to 10 years. Its record with laptops, tablets and Stadia says to read that promise closely before you pay $899.
Not today’s newsGoogle has ended more than one laptop or tablet line while people were still using it. The Googlebook goes on sale October 4 with a new support promise: updates for up to 10 years.

Google’s Googlebook goes on sale in the US on October 4, with launches in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia on October 5. Prices start at $899 for the Acer Googlebook 14 and go up to $1,299 for the ASUS and HP models, according to Digit. Google has not named an India launch date or a price.

Will Google stick with it or drop it like the rest? Here is the record.
What Google is promising
Google’s pre-order announcement says Googlebook OS “comes with regular feature drops and updates for up to 10 years.” Some coverage rounds that up. Chrome Unboxed calls it a decade of guaranteed OS updates. Google’s sentence has “up to” in it, and it does not say which updates or on which models.
The Chromebook promise is more specific. Google’s help page says Chromebooks get 10 years of automatic updates, and its guidance for IT admins says existing ChromeOS devices will get updates through mid-2034. Googlebook is a new operating system built on Android, so it is starting that clock over.
What Google has dropped before
Google’s first-party laptops and tablets have a poor record.
- The Pixel Slate launched in October 2018. In June 2019 Google said it was ending tablet development and canceled two unreleased models. A Google spokesperson said at the time that the company would continue to support the Slate, per Laptop Under Budget. It was removed from the Google Store in January 2021, per Wikipedia.
- In September 2022 The Verge reported that Google had canceled its next Pixelbook and disbanded the team, as part of cost cutting. Months earlier, Rick Osterloh, Google’s hardware chief, had told the site Google was “going to do Pixelbooks in the future.”
- Stadia, Google’s cloud gaming service, was shut down.
- Steam on Chromebooks, a beta that let people play PC games, was ended on January 1, 2026, according to Forbes. Forbes suggests the move away from ChromeOS is the reason.
Nearly everything on that list was Google’s own hardware or a side product. The Googlebook is not that.
Why this one looks different
Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo are all building Googlebooks, so Google cannot end the line by disbanding a hardware team. The software carries Google’s Gemini features and the Android stack, which is the center of what Google sells. Google’s admin help page lays out a transition plan that runs to 2034, and says the first management tools for schools and businesses arrive in the second half of 2027.
Google says Googlebooks and Chromebooks will coexist. Android Authority reports that a Google vice president confirmed new Chromebooks will still launch this year and into next. Google did not say what happens after that.
What could still go wrong
The open question is what the ten years cover.
Chrome Unboxed argued before launch that the length of the support window could make or break the platform, and pointed out that Android’s update limits have historically come from chipmakers dropping support for their drivers. The first Googlebooks use Intel Core Ultra or Snapdragon X Elite chips, per 9to5Google.
Google’s own Chromebook page also warns that existing features can stop working after a device’s final update.
Then there is India. It is not on the launch list, and Business Standard says Google has not confirmed a date or a price. The Cashify estimate of about ₹65,000 is a guess, not a Google figure.
The call
Google is unlikely to drop the Googlebook the way it dropped Stadia or the Pixelbook, so that is not the reason to hold off. The reason is that the ten years cannot be checked yet.
If you are in India, wait for a date and a price. Elsewhere, read the support page for your exact model before you buy.
Google gets the headline. Coverage says "10 years of guaranteed updates." Google's own launch post says "up to 10 years." The free extras that come with the laptop are shorter: 12 months of Google AI Pro, 3 months of YouTube Premium, 1 year of GeForce NOW.
Wait. India is not on Google's launch list and there is no date or price. Elsewhere the platform looks safe for now, but the ten years cannot be checked yet. Read what is in writing for your exact model before you buy.
