    commentary

Nvidia just shrank an AI supercomputer into a desktop

Nvidia is putting an 'AI supercomputer' on your desk. Its RTX Spark Windows PCs land in October with up to 1 petaflop of local AI compute and up to 128GB of unified memory, from Dell, HP, Asus, Lenovo, MSI and Surface. The promise is running big models offline, keeping your data on-device and skipping the cloud bill, but it's built for AI pros and tinkerers. For everyday chat and images, your phone already does the job. 🖥️

    The problem

Serious AI work still means renting cloud GPUs: recurring bills, added latency, and your data leaving your own machine.

    What changed

Nvidia's RTX Spark Windows PCs arrive in October pairing a 20-core Grace CPU with an RTX Blackwell GPU for up to 1 petaflop of local AI and up to 128GB unified memory, from Dell, HP, Asus, Lenovo, MSI and Microsoft Surface, and built with Microsoft for on-device Windows AI agents.

    The catch

It's aimed at developers and AI enthusiasts at a premium price; for everyday chatbots and image tools, the cloud is still cheaper and simpler.

    What it means for you

If you don't train or run large models locally, skip the rush. Your phone and free cloud AI already cover almost all daily use.

India wants to make the chips inside your gadgets

India wants to make the chips inside your gadgets. SEMICON India 2026 opened in Delhi this week (Sept 17-19) under the theme 'Silicon to Systems,' with the goal of ending near-total chip imports and building the whole ecosystem at home. Local fabs would mean jobs, supply security and less price shock when global chip supply tightens. The honest bit: fabs take years, and early Made-in-India chips are basic nodes, not the 2nm silicon in flagships, yet. 🏭

    The problem

India imports almost all of its semiconductors, leaving prices and supply of everything from phones to cars exposed to global shocks.

    What changed

SEMICON India 2026 opened at Yashobhoomi in Delhi (Sept 17-19), inaugurated by PM Modi under the theme 'Transform Tomorrow: Silicon to Systems,' pushing to build a full domestic chip-manufacturing ecosystem.

    The catch

Fabs take years to come online, and India's early output is basic and legacy nodes, not the cutting-edge 2nm chips inside flagship phones.

    What it means for you

Don't expect a Made-in-India flagship chip soon, but a local ecosystem could eventually mean steadier prices and supply for the gadgets you buy.

    tip

Reach the top of a giant phone with one hand

Techtember phones keep getting bigger, but your thumb is the same size. Android's built-in One-handed mode slides the entire screen down so the top row is reachable. Turn it on under Settings then System then Gestures then One-handed mode, then swipe down on the bottom edge whenever you need it and tap to snap back. No app required, and it works on most Androids. 📱

    The problem

Flagship phones now stretch past 6.7 inches, putting the top of the screen out of thumb reach when you hold them one-handed.

    What changed

Android has a built-in One-handed mode that pulls the whole screen down into reach: enable it at Settings > System > Gestures > One-handed mode, then swipe down on the bottom edge and tap to restore.

    The catch

The exact menu path and gesture vary slightly by brand (Samsung, Xiaomi and others), and it's off by default, so most people never find it.

    What it means for you

One toggle makes a big phone usable one-handed on the bus or train, with no third-party app needed.

    myth buster

Incognito mode never made you anonymous

Time to kill a myth: Incognito is not anonymous. Private/Incognito mode only stops your own device from saving history, cookies and form data. Your internet provider, your office or college Wi-Fi, every site you open and anything you log into can still see you. What it's actually good for is not saving history on a shared laptop or logging into a second account, and that's about it. For real privacy on public Wi-Fi a trusted VPN helps, but even that is no invisibility cloak. 🕵️

    The problem

Millions assume Incognito/Private mode hides their browsing from everyone, and do sensitive things thinking they're invisible.

    What changed

Incognito only clears local traces on your device (history, cookies, form data); it was never designed to hide you from networks or the sites you visit.

    The catch

Your ISP, network admin, the websites you open and any account you sign into still see your activity, and a VPN hides your network path, not your logged-in identity.

    What it means for you

Use Incognito for shared devices and second logins; for real network privacy use a trusted VPN on public Wi-Fi, and never treat either as true anonymity.

    hot take

Do you actually need to buy EA Sports FC 27?

EA Sports FC 27 early access landed today, with the full release on Sept 25 across every platform including Switch 2. Honest take: annual sports games are the ultimate 'do I really need this?' purchase, because most of the yearly update is roster tweaks, new kits and a menu reshuffle, sold at full price every single year. If you own FC 26 your game didn't stop working; if you skipped a couple of editions, jumping in makes sense. Otherwise, wait for a price drop or a genuine gameplay leap. 🎮

    The problem

Annual sports titles ask full price every year, and it's rarely clear whether the new edition is a real upgrade or just a roster refresh.

    What changed

EA Sports FC 27 opened early access on Sept 18 (Ultimate editions) ahead of the Sept 25 worldwide launch across PC, PlayStation, Xbox and, new this year, Nintendo Switch 2.

    The catch

Most of a yearly sports release is squads, kits and menu changes rather than a new engine, so the value depends heavily on how long it's been since your last edition.

    What it means for you

If you already own FC 26, wait for a sale or a real gameplay leap; if you skipped a year or two, or want the new Switch 2 version, it's a fairer buy.

That's all five. Next edition tomorrow.Press and hold
